What led you to mining?
I was tired of not being valued at other jobs and not being able to provide the life that my family deserves.
What do you find most rewarding about your job as a miner?
The brotherhood that comes with the job. I’ve worked in multiple different fields and nothing comes close to the family you gain when becoming a coal miner!
What are some of the challenges you face regularly in your work, and how do you address them?
Machinery issues is the most challenging issue that you will face not only in coal mining but in any type of mining. Taking care of the equipment and performing routine maintenance will save you from unnecessary downtime and save money in the long run.
Are there any particular skills, qualifications or advice that are essential for someone interested in becoming a miner?
Where I’m from, all you need is a high school diploma and a two-week underground training class to become an underground coal miner.
How do you see the future of mining evolving, and what opportunities or challenges do you anticipate?
The future of mining is simple really. If the resources that your mining for are available and you have men and women willing to do the job that most normal people are afraid to do, then there will always be a future for mining. There are a ton of opportunities with mining! From being an hourly miner al the way to becoming a mine Forman!
What are your favorite things to do outside of work?
I love to play with my kids every chance I get to see them! Being a miner, you don’t get much time with family so cherish every moment.
