Chris Michael

Hard Rock Miner

What type of Miner are you and how long have you been mining?
Just passed 20 years. Currently consulting and managing but still enjoy drilling and bolting when the opportunity allows.

Where are you currently mining?
A few places, USA, Namibia and Greece.

What do you love most about your career?
A few things. The people that I meet in the industry, the camaraderie of working underground and the opportunities within the industry. The resources that we mine allow people to provide for their families, build communities and give people better lives, this is a major motivator for me.

If there was one thing you could change about the mining industry, what would it be?
Two things – that the industry better promotes the social and environmental benefits of mining. A wind turbine needs met coal, steel, copper, aluminium and plastics to be made and these resources come from the hard-working Men and Women in the industry. Secondly, that greater effort is made within the industry to teach safety risk management techniques. To training and coach people about what can be dangerous and what we can do to make it safe.

What advice would you give a miner just starting out?
Be reliable, be consistent, be appreciative and be humble. Take ownership of what you do and don’t take risks for short term gains.

What are your favorite things to do outside of work?
Spend time with my Wife and two Children.

What is one fun fact about you?
That I’m a night owl and miss working nightshifts.
